Alan Price / Between Today And Yesterday (1974) Design by Seabrook Graves Aslett. Illustration by Barbara Brunsdon.

Dick Powell In Hollywood 1933-1935 Cover art designed by Nereus Bell. Illustration by George Telo.

Ian Matthews / Stealin’ Home (1978) Photography by Steve Hiett. Design by Chris Moore and Michael Munday. I saw this one when I was in Brussels a while ago and Instagrammed it, then I couldn’t get it out of my head so I went all the way back to buy it. It’s a beautiful photograph and I appreciate that they put it on the cover. Having been designing record sleeves for so long now I know how rare it is to use such a subtle and enigmatic image. I can’t place where it was taken, could be Paris or London.

The Section / Fork It Over (1977) Art Direction by Roy Kohara. Illustration by Dave Willardson & Star Studios

Starcastle / Starcastle (1976) Art Direction by Ed Lee. Illustration by Alex Ebel. Just been shooting the new Basement Jaxx sleeve today which involved a model wearing a holographic headpiece. I shot it on blue and it kind of reminded me of this sleeve, in an abstract way. Great typography too. (Mat Maitland, Leopard Tree Dream)

Cerrone / Cerrone IV (1980) Photograph by Cheico Leidmann. Design by Creac.

Kitaro / In Person (1985) Art Direction & Design by Masayuki Yano (Vitamin Studio). Illustration by Kazuo Hakamanda. Photography by Nobaharu Kondo (PCC) & Hideo Matsumura.

The Beach Boys / L.A. (Light Album) (1979) Art Direction & Design by Tony Lane. Cover Artists - ‘Beach Boys’ by Gary Meyer; ‘Light Album’ by Jim Heimann; ‘Lady Lynda’ by Dave McMacken; ‘Full Sail’ by Steve Carver; ‘Sumahama’ by Drew Struzan; ‘Here Comes The Night’ by Nick Taggart. This is the kind of sleeve we might have done at Big Active, it’s in the same spirit as our Beck and Mark Ronson sleeves where we commissioned a variety of different artists to create imagery for the sleeve.  I love the eclectic nature of all the different styles, I think Lady Lynda is my favourite postcard. If you’re curious there’s 6 more on the back! (Mat Maitland, Leopard Tree Dream)

Jefferson Startship / Dragon Fly (1974) Art Direction by Acy Lehman/Frank Mulvey. Illustration by Peter Lloyd. Amazing illustration by English airbrush artist Peter Lloyd. He was a leader of the Californian airbrush art scene in the 70’s and 80’s having moved to America as a teen. I have a great book called ‘Overspray’ which features Lloyd and many other of his contemporaries. Sadly, he died in 2009. I’ve heard that his family were selling some of his original pieces last year, would love to own one. (Mat Maitland, Leopard Tree Dream)

Grace Jones / I Need A Man (1976) Cover by Richard Bernstein. It’s been a while since I posted a Grace Jones cover, I found this in Brussels last week. More perfection from Richard Bernstein of Interview magazine fame.

黄金の犬 (The Golden Dog) / Original Soundtrack (1979) No credits. Just back from a weeks holiday in Brussels, found this on my travels.

Golden Summer / Various Artists (1976) Art Direction and Design by Ria Lewerke. Illustration by Jim Evans.

Jan & Dean / Surf City (1981) I bought this for the photograph, it’s really special I think, very cool and spontaneous. It has a kind of Amity Island (from Jaws) feel to it, typical of that American surf town and perfect for a surf record. Unfortunately there’s no credit for the shot though. Cher / Half Breed (1973) Art Concept by Richard Grant. Photography by Gene Trindl.

Girl School / Hit And Run (1981) Illustration by Alan Daniels. I really want to do a sleeve showing the artist from the back, I’ve played around with it on a few projects recently but none that have made it through the creative process. I love the idea of it. It’s a small feature on this particular sleeve though and not really what attracted me to it, that was the illustration itself and the colour palette - pink and blue always work so well together.
